Surgery is generally recommended when non-operative treatments have failed or been exhausted, and your symptoms are significantly affecting your function. Dr Brooker typically advises conservative treatments first (physiotherapy, medications, injections, or bracing). However, in some cases, particularly with fractures, surgery may be recommended earlier if non-operative treatment is likely to produce suboptimal results. Dr Brooker will explain treatment options and recommendations, allowing you to weigh potential benefits against risks and recovery time and make an informed decision.

Every surgery and every patient is different, but no surgery is completely risk-free. Common risks across most procedures include bleeding, infection, blood clots, and reactions to anaesthesia. Each specific operation has its own particular risks, which Dr Brooker will discuss with you in detail during your consultation. It's also important to recognise that most operations have a significant recovery period that's often longer and more challenging than patients anticipate. This is part of the normal healing process.

You can drive when you're safe to do so and when a reasonable person would consider it safe. This generally means you're off strong pain medications, can react quickly, and can operate the pedals comfortably. For joint replacements, this is usually around 6 weeks, and for ACL surgery, it's typically 4-6 weeks, but it can vary significantly depending on which leg was operated on and how you're healing.

This depends entirely on what type of work you do. For office work, you might return in 6-8 weeks after a joint replacement or 1-2 weeks after ACL surgery. For manual labour, a period of 3-6 months after joint replacement is usually standard. For farm duties the recovery is usually graded, with some lighter or vehicle based duties possible after 4-6 weeks but more manual duties involving tools, large cattle or uneven ground around 3-6 months.
