Dr Brooker's approach to care

Dr Brooker believes in taking a conservative approach to orthopaedic care. No surgery is risk-free, and non-operative management should generally be exhausted before considering surgical options.

It's crucial for patients to understand the likely course of any surgical journey, including the risks and recovery period involved. Dr Brooker places strong emphasis on patient education and often recommends continuing with non-operative management while you gather as much information as possible about surgical options.

Having realistic expectations about outcomes is essential for making an informed decision about the right time to transition from conservative to operative management. Dr Brooker provides comprehensive information to help you make the best decision for your circumstances and treatment goals.

Telehealth consultations

For patients who live a long distance away, Dr Brooker will offer telehealth consultations for certain follow-up appointments. However, initial consultations are generally conducted in person to allow for proper physical examination.

Post-operative care

Detailed post-operative instructions will be provided specific to your procedure. These will cover pain management, wound care, activity restrictions, and when to contact our rooms.

Physiotherapy

Most patients will benefit from physiotherapy after surgery. Dr Brooker will typically recommend starting with a physiotherapist close to your home for convenience. Inpatients at Maryvale Private Hospital receive daily physiotherapy during their stay.

Recovery timelines

Recovery varies significantly between patients and procedures. Dr Brooker will provide specific timelines based on your surgery, but expect that recovery often takes longer than initially anticipated.

Exercise programs

Exercise and rehabilitation programs are tailored to each patient's needs and procedure. Your physiotherapist will guide you through the appropriate stages of recovery.
